At UCSB we strive to maintain an environment that is welcoming and safe for every member of our community. In the event that a hate crime or incident does occur, the Dean of Students Office serves as the campus reporting point and may work with the impacted parties in coordinating a response.

The Campus Elections Commission comprises students, faculty, and staff.  The commission is a neutral, impartial body who makes recommendations to the Chancellor on all issues related to campus-wide elections.  This includes (but is not limited to) ballot wording, election timing, election operation, policies, practices, and violations.  The commission also educates voters about the scope, financial implications, pros and cons of each ballot measure being placed before the electorate, and assures that campus-wide elections are conducted in a fair and efficient manner.

Civic and Community Engagement develops initiatives that foster an environment of inquiry, civil debate, democratic participation, and access to resources such as higher education. These projects are initiated by UCSB students and include Voter Registration, GOTV, the Civic Engagement Scholars Program (CESP), and workshops for first-generation, low-income high school students to pursue post-secondary education.

Deltopia & Halloween

The Dean of Students Office works closely with campus and community partners to facilitate timely information to students about annual events such as Halloween and Deltopia celebrations within Isla Vista. We work with student leaders to promote safety and alternative events, and facilitate conversations between students and the UCSB administration, Santa Barbara County officials, and the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office to address issues and concerns that may arise.

Unexpected financial burdens arise when we least expect it, and we never want a student's financial hardship to negatively impact their ability to continue their education. In order to offset these costs, we have a broad range of resources, including a Financial Crisis Response Team, short term emergency loans, and emergency grants.

We are strongly committed to fostering an environment where our students feel empowered to seek knowledge and explore ideas. The commitment to free and protected speech is the foundation of our teaching and service. However, some speech and expression does not align with the University’s values and can pose a threat to the safety of our community. To ensure that your speech, expression, assembly, or event does not inadvertently violate a University, State, or Federal guideline, the Dean of Students Office and the Demonstration Response Team serve as a resource to ensure safe and effective activism.

Major Events Coordination

Chaired by AVC Katya Armistead, the Major Events Committee is a group of campus and community departments and organizations that work closely with event organizers to ensure the facilitation and safety of local events and attractions.

Student Memorial Scholarships are offered by several academic and administrative units on campus to honor our community members. Each fund is as unique as the person whose name it bears and strives to build a bridge between the lives lost and current students, allowing for students' spirits to live on through future Gauchos.

The Dean of Students Office coordinates voter registration for the campus. As part of promoting community engagement, civic responsibility, and transmitting UCSB’s core values of leadership and scholarship, all members of the campus community are encouraged to register and vote.
